Shilpi – Apr 10, 2022:

I attended LH in the 80s and 90s. It was or is supposed to be one of the better educational establishments in the city. While I was at LH, I went along with everything they expected us to do. This entailed praying to Jesus Christ every morning, singing lots of hymns, marching practice, and being forced to only speak in English. We never acknowledged our own religious backgrounds. We never celebrated or acknowledged Eid or Diwali or any other important festivals in India. We did, however, acknowledge and make a big deal of Christmas – hosting skits and plays that depicted Jesus Christ being born and all that. We were only allowed to speak in English. We were never to be seen or heard talking in Hindi or Bengali or any other regional languages of India. Did it ever occur to anyone that the above was completely absurd? The entire LH experience was like an alternate universe. Nothing was rooted in reality. You are brainwashed into living in a world that does not exist. There was a strict level of policing – from what you say, how you say it, to what you wear and what you practice. In retrospect, the experience and the education was very ‘missionary’ and such schools should not have any place in India anymore. [A mission school or missionary school is a religious school originally developed and run by Christian missionaries. The mission school was commonly used in the colonial era for the purposes of Westernization of local people.] Schools should either welcome and celebrate all cultures and religions or none at all. Loreto House, convent schools, missionary schools should have no place in our society. I certainly feel that all my years in school were spent learning about a religion I have no affiliation with and I was not in touch with my own culture, traditions, religion. I was ‘westernized’. When I meet people from across the country who did not attend convent or missionary schools, I am struck by the huge chiasmatic difference between them and myself. In addition to the above, the teachers were obnoxious. They interfered in students’ private lives, tried to police what they did after school at their own time, and also hit students and yelled at them often while bullying them.
