Moss grows from spores. When the spore starts to grow, it sends out a thin green thread which grows branches. Buds form on the branches and grow into ew moss plants. The young plants therefore grow very close together and soon form a mat. Moss leaves are not waterproof, and by growing in thick mats they keep moisture around themselves.
