Some plants, such as ivy or tropical lianas, use other plants as supports. This avoids spending energy on making their own stem stiff. However, they make their own food. Mistletoe is a part-parasite. It takes some food from the tree it clings to by piercing the bark with root-like tubes, but it also has green leaves to make some food on its own. Other parasites take all their food from the host' plant and make none of their own. They are true parasites.
