If the egg is fertilised, its outer 1membrane swells into a jelly-like barrier to keep out other sperm. The fertilised egg travels down the Fallopian tube to the womb. As it does so it divides, first into two cells, then four, then eight. It arrives in the Womb as a ball of about 100 cells.
