During the summer the leaves of a tree are busy making food for the tree. They contain chlorophyll which makes them green. When autumn comes, the stalks of the leaves are seaied off and the chlorophyll decays. The leaves lose their green colour and turn yellow, red or brown before they fall off. Once the leaves have fallen, the tree rests until the following spring, using food stored during the summer. Some trees do not lose all their leaves, and these are called evergreens. Most trees that have cones (conifers) are evergreen.
