Cuts stop bleeding because blood quickly forms a clot that plugs the wound and seals off the damaged vessels. At the site of an injury, the platelets in the bloodstream stick together, as well as to the edges of the cut, making a thin seal. The platelets, and cells damaged by the injury, release substances that react with clotting factors in the blood to form fibres. Blood cells get caught up in the tangle of platelets and fibres, and form a clot that plugs the leak.
