Solids are rigid because of the strong intermolecular forces of attraction present in the solid. The intermolecular forces existing among the constituent particles of solid are very strong. That’s why the particles of solid cannot move from their positions, they only vibrate about their mean positions.

Rigidity in solids is due to fixed positions of the constituent particles and their oscillations about their mean positions
